We are pleased to announce that the AR sport HADO has been officially adopted as part of the physical education curriculum at Shizuoka Prefectural Shizuoka Nishi High School in Japan. This initiative marks a significant step toward promoting inclusive and accessible sports education, regardless of athletic ability, gender, or physical differences.
The adoption of HADO was made possible through the introduction by Associate Professor Naoki Suzuki of Tokyo Gakugei University, who has been exploring the use of XR and AR technologies in education.
■ Real-World Application: HADO in the Sports Course Curriculum
At Shizuoka Nishi High School, HADO is being integrated into the “Sports II – Ball Games” unit within the specialized physical education curriculum of the Sports Course. The program is designed to help students gain new perspectives on physical activity by incorporating a sport that does not rely solely on physical ability.
In addition, HADO will also be included in general PE classes, allowing all students in the school to participate and experience the excitement of AR sports.
▶︎ Comment from Mr. Toru Hanno, Head of the Sports Course:
“We recognized the educational value of HADO when our students had the opportunity to try it. It enables a new style of physical education that goes beyond athletic ability or gender. We adopted it as a model for inclusive PE that encourages student engagement from a fresh perspective.”
■ Academic Collaboration: Tokyo Gakugei University’s Approach to AR in Education
Tokyo Gakugei University has been actively developing new educational methods using XR and metaverse technologies. In 2023, the university collaborated with Shizuoka Nishi High School to conduct a unique class that allowed students to study both badminton and HADO as net-based sports, comparing their characteristics and strategies to enhance learning.
▶︎ Associate Professor Naoki Suzuki comments:
“It is symbolic that a sports-focused high school has officially integrated an AR sport into its curriculum. HADO represents a new form of sports where anyone—regardless of physical ability or body type—can be the star. This is a powerful step forward for inclusive, engaging, and innovative physical education. I hope this model expands not only across Japan but also around the world.”
■ What is HADO?
HADO is a next-generation AR sport developed in Japan. Players wear a head-mounted display and arm sensor to launch energy balls and deploy shields in a 3v3 team-based match. It is easy to learn, physically engaging, and highly customizable, making it suitable for players of all ages and abilities.
