Collaborative Research with meleap Aims to Address the Decline in Youth Sports Participation through STEAM Inquiry-Based Learning
August 21, 2025 | meleap Inc.
Hyogo Prefectural Himeji Shikisai High School (Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture) has officially introduced the AR sport HADO, developed by meleap Inc., into its STEAM Inquiry Department curriculum. This initiative, part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) High School Reform Promotion Project for a New Era, incorporates HADO into student-led, problem-solving-oriented learning.
Background
In FY2024, Himeji Shikisai High School launched its STEAM Inquiry Department, merging the former Science Survey Course and Global Communication Course. The department promotes inquiry-based learning, aiming to cultivate students who can adapt to rapid social change.
Students highlighted the decline in children’s participation in sports as a key concern. To address this, the school began collaborative research with meleap. HADO was recognized for enabling even students less confident in physical activity to enjoy sports, while providing digital-native students with natural opportunities to be active.
Activities
- May 21–23: HADO trial sessions and lectures by meleap staff
- July 22–25: HADO setup practicum, STEAM Day operational training, and student surveys
- July 26: HADO trial for educators and junior high students during STEAM Day, followed by effect verification
- September–December: Continued verification of HADO’s effectiveness
- December: Announcement of results
Why HADO?
Students identified fewer ball-game-friendly parks and increased gaming time as causes of declining sports participation. After consulting the Hyogo Prefectural Sports Promotion Division, HADO was recommended.
HADO’s AR-based gameplay overcomes park restrictions and appeals to the gaming generation. Its strategic and discussion-oriented nature also promotes logical thinking and communication skills.
Impressions & Results
Students shared positive feedback:
- “Even though I’m not good at sports, I really enjoyed HADO. The rules and controls were simple and fun.”
- “It felt like being inside a video game. I hope it spreads further.”
- “HADO is more enjoyable than I expected. If it spreads nationwide, it could help solve youth inactivity.”
Over 90% of participants said they wanted to exercise more, and all responded that HADO was “fun.” Students also reported improved teamwork and communication skills through strategic play.
